140-home development off Murrells Inlet road heads to Horry County Council

Nearly 140 homes could be coming to an area near McDowell Shortcut Road in Murrells Inlet.

Horry County Planning Commission members Thursday night recommended approval of a project looking to rezone nearly 100 acres across from Ranch Haven Drive near Highway 707.

Horry County leaders shot down the project in late June over concerns of wetlands, flooding and traffic. Developers were looking to rezone the property — half of which was wetlands — but now say they’re going to leave that half untouched.

Developers already received approval for 95 lots off of McDowell Shortcut Road but decided to combine it with 80 more acres next door. Now, they say there are no lots in the 500-year flood zone.

There are plans to develop the 95 lots in the near future, but because of the ongoing traffic project at McDowell Shortcut and Tournament Boulevard, the other half will have to wait until the project is completed.

However, there still are some concerns around traffic on an already-busy McDowell Shortcut Road with some nearby schools near or over 100% capacity.

“It’s not every landowner’s right to maximize the development of their property without the consequences of the existing property,” a McDowell Shortcut resident said in Thursday’s meeting. “This particular property does not deserve this number of units going in there in this manner.”
